Capability Ceiling

/KAY-PUH-BIL-I-TEE SEE-LING/
  NOUN

The Capability Ceiling is the limit on what a business can deliver with the people and capabilities it currently has.

MEANING

Every company has a Capability Ceiling. You can sell beyond it, forecast beyond it and make spectacular PowerPoint promises beyond it. You just can't sustainably operate beyond it.

‍

Instead of asking only how many people you're allowed to hire, ask what's backing up, what the business is turning away and which missing skill could raise the ceiling. Another approved requisition isn't the achievement. Being able to do more is.

The New Dictionary of Hiring card: Capability Ceiling, noun. The limit on what a business can deliver with the people and capabilities it currently has. Abstract iridescent glass shape on a white background.

MAKE THE CHANGE

Instead of:
Treating headcount only as cost.
Ask:
Where is our current capability ceiling limiting growth?

EXAMPLE

Every team is busy, delivery times are slipping and leaders keep raising targets. One missing skill is preventing the business from taking on more work without breaking something.

HOW TO USE IT

Ask operating leaders what is backing up, what they are declining and where teams are at their limit. Identify the capability setting that limit and model how raising it would change capacity.

SAY IT TO LEADERSHIP

We can raise the target again, but the capacity won't appear by PowerPoint. Here's the capability setting our current ceiling, and the investment that could raise it.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH

Capability Gap: the Capability Ceiling is how much the business can do in total; a Capability Gap is a specific thing it can't do yet.
