Capability Unlock

/KAY-PUH-BIL-I-TEE UN-LOK/
  NOUN

A Capability Unlock is a person or capability whose arrival makes a previously constrained business outcome possible.

MEANING

One hire can let a company bid on a project, open a territory, launch a service or free ten other people from a bottleneck. Calling that a “filled vacancy” is technically correct and economically useless.

‍

Name the thing that becomes possible once the person arrives. That's the Capability Unlock, and it's what the business was buying in the first place. It also gives recruiting a better result to report than another closed requisition.

The New Dictionary of Hiring card: Capability Unlock, noun. A person or capability whose arrival makes a previously constrained business outcome possible. Abstract iridescent glass shape on a white background.

MAKE THE CHANGE

Instead of:
Measuring every hire by the seat they occupy.
Ask:
What becomes possible once this person is here?

EXAMPLE

One experienced hire can establish a new offering. Another can remove an approval bottleneck that has slowed three teams. The gain isn't one more employee. It's what the business can now do.

HOW TO USE IT

Before opening a priority role, name the business outcome it should unlock. After the person is effective, report whether that outcome actually became possible.

SAY IT TO LEADERSHIP

When this person arrives and becomes effective, we can do work we can't do today. That's the return on the hire I want us to track.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH

The Capability Receipt: a Capability Unlock is what a hire makes possible; the Capability Receipt is the one-line test that names it.
